In-Class Exercise: Special Lead Examples

Example of a Narrative Lead:

Washington's Initiative 1000 is modeled on Oregon's Death with Dignity Act
Hal Bernton, SeattleTimes.com

"Tony Miller spends his days in a towel-draped chair, heavily medicated and sweating profusely as prostate cancer spreads through his body. Over and over again, he changes out of drenched T-shirts and shorts, puts them on a hanger to dry and then goes back to his chair to sweat some more... (this is the narrative lead)
In November, Washington voters will decide on Initiative 1000, which would make the state the second to allow physicians to prescribe lethal medications for patients diagnosed with less than six months to live..." (this is the nut graph, fifth paragraph that explains the lead)

Example of a Direct-Address Lead:

A little work now will reward you with a colorful garden in spring
Eric Liskey, SeattleTimes.com

"Follow these planting and design tips for your best-ever display of daffodils, tulips, crocus and other bulbs come spring, from this month's Better Homes and Gardens magazine."
